The U.S. military struggled with Guantanamo detainees Saturday while transferring prisoners into isolation in an attempt to break the months long hunger strike.
“Some detainees resisted with improvised weapons and, in response, four less-than-lethal rounds were fired,” Navy Captain Robert Durand said in a statement.
Prisoners in Camp 6 bays had been living in communal type cells, but U.S. forces moved about 60 of them Saturday into maximum security type, single cells “for their health and security,” the Miami Herald reported.
Guards encountered resistance from the prisoners who used self-made weapons like “broom and mop handles as well as plastic water bottles that had been wrapped and modified into clubs,” the article said.
“As part of the hunger strike, prisoners have been refusing to let food carts enter some of the bays,” Russia Today reported.
“The reason for the move was explained because the detainees covered surveillance cameras, windows and partitions, preventing guards from observing them during a hunger strike that has been continuing for more than two months.”
The Herald article said after the raid, “65 of the 166 captives [were] counted as hunger strikers,” a number up from the 45 previously reported. Thirteen detainees are supposedly being force-fed “by tubes snaked up their noses and into their stomachs.”
I believe we are supposed to be sympathetic to the reasons offered about why the prisoner’s aren’t eating: “Lawyers say the hunger strike is caused by the fact that most detainees are held there without being charged, overwhelmed by the depressing feeling they may never leave the prison,” RT said.
“If they are together, if they are in a communal living space they can communicate and at least support each other and now that they are being isolated, it is another form of torment,” Cindy Panuco, a lawyer for one of the detainees, said. “To be taken away from your friends and comrades, who were there with you, makes it much more difficult to endure what is already a very difficult situation.”
I submit, then, that perhaps would-be terrorists think twice about engaging in terrorist acts against the United States if they don’t want to wind up in Gitmo.
