The marriage of convenience between the American left and Islamic extremists that paid such dividends during the “Arab Spring” is proving to still be in the honeymoon phase.
Members of the Syrian opposition movement have hired a top Occupy Wall Street activist as their U.S. lobbyist, according to the Huffington Post.
Carne Ross will join other lobbyists in the U.S. to assist the rebels in seeking military aid from the United States.
This coming in spite of a particularly detailed and horrific U.N. report out in March accusing rebels fighting to oust President Bashar al-Assad of murder, rape, torture and forced disappearances, CNN reported.
And a Daily Mail report in December that Syrian rebels beheaded a Christian man and fed his body to dogs because he was heard complaining that fighters against the ruling regime behaved like bandits.
Even more troubling, as reported by the USA Today, is that one of the Syrian rebel groups just pledged allegiance to Sheik Ayman al-Zawahri, al-Qaeda’s replacement for Osama bin Laden.
And with al-Qaeda insurgents now actively engaged in the effort to bring down the Syrian regime of Bashar Assad, real concerns are raised over what factions within the Syrian rebel coalition will emerge triumphant if and when Assad falls, the New Media Journal notes.
Yet, these “lobbyists” will be warmly received within the halls of Congress. And President Obama is likely to increase the level of assistance being offered to the rebels.
Secretary of State John Kerry met with Syrian rebel leaders on Wednesday in London, and plans to attend another meeting of a “Friends of Syria” group in Turkey on April 20, according to the Huffington Post.
The online news source also reports there are signs that White House policy could be shifting in the rebels’ favor.
