A South Florida congressman, not known for being the sharpest knife in the drawer, has shown once again that not much has changed — the people of the 18th Congressional District are still under-represented.
Democrat Patrick Murphy sent an email to his supporters and constituents this week, titled, “sequester this.”
“While painful cuts are going into effect because of the sequestration, I thought it was wrong that congressional salaries went untouched,” he wrote. “I decided to do something about it and sequester myself.”
After reading those words, I’d imagined he was going to return a portion of his salary to the Treasury. As it turns out, I was only half right.
“I am cutting my own salary and donating five percent of it to a different charity each month,” Murphy said. I actually laughed out loud at that one.
First of all, he missed the entire point of the sequester. It’s to cut down on government spending. It’s not about redirecting spending, which is what he’s doing.
Secondly, “cutting” one’s salary cannot be equated with “donating.” They’re two different concepts, and given that he was trained as an accountant and worked as a CPA, according to his own website, he should know better.
Third, although donating 5 percent of his salary to charity sounds noble, it really isn’t. By donating to charity, Murphy receives a tax deduction — something that would be denied him if he returned the money to the Treasury. Also, blowing one’s own horn about charitable contributions is hardly noble — a truly good deed goes unheralded.
In the closing days of his congressional campaign, Murphy declared that the United States had to remove its troops from Iraq. His opponent, then-Congressman Allen West, informed him that we were already out of Iraq, and had been for almost a year.
Murphy is just as clueless today, or he believes his constituents are.
The email closed with a “donate” button, meaning he’s already thinking about 2014, as he should be. By that time, the people should have had enough.
