Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R) and West Virginia U.S. Senator Joe Machin (D), announced today a deal has been reached to expand background checks to all commercial gun sales, to include sales at gun shows and sales via the internet.
The only exemption appears to be for sales that are sold exclusively by word of mouth that do not include advertising.
Toomey is under fire from gun rights organizations and conservatives around the country angry at him for putting his name of the proposed legislation – calling him a traitor and worse, according to the Examiner.
Talk show phone lines were lighting up this afternoon as conservatives vented, the report notes.
The deal would “expand background checks, make gun trafficking a federal crime for the first time and bolster federal funding for school security plans,” the Independent Journal Review reports. It does not include creating a national gun registry.
In the end, the agreement only further restricts law abiding gun owners and would not have prevented the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy.
