Six Americans were murdered in two deadly attacks in Afghanistan Saturday –including Anne Smedinghoff, a young, idealistic member of the U.S. Foreign Service. Sound familiar? It should. Meet Benghazi 2.0.
Smedinghoff, 25, a native of the Chicago suburb of Lake Forest, was the assistant press secretary for the U.S Embassy in Kabul.
“She was doing what she loved, and she was doing great things,” her father, Tom Smedinghoff, told the Chicago Tribune. “We’re just in total shock.”
Secretary of State John Kerry, who was in Turkey when he received news of the attacks, said he had met Smedinghoff while in Afghanistan just a few days earlier.
At a Sunday news conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, Kerry described Smedinghoff as “a selfless, idealistic woman who woke up yesterday morning and set out to bring textbooks to school children, to bring them knowledge,” according to ABC News.
“Anne and those with her were attacked by the Taliban terrorists who woke up that day not with a mission to educate or to help, but with a mission to destroy,” Kerry said, ABC News reported. “A brave American was determined to brighten the light of learning through books, written in the native tongue of the students she had never met, whom she felt it incumbent to help.”
Smedinghoff “was met by a cowardly terrorist determined to bring darkness and death to total strangers,” Kerry said. “These are the challenges that our citizens face, not just in Afghanistan but in many dangerous parts of the world — where a nihilism, an empty approach, is willing to take life rather than give it.”
Smedinghoff was a 2009 graduate Johns Hopkins University, where she ma
jored in international studies and became a key organizer of the university’s annual Foreign Affairs Symposium in 2008.
University President Ronald J. Daniels praised her in a letter to the student body Sunday, saying, “Her selfless action for others was nothing new.”
Meanwhile, President Obama played his 118th round of golf since assuming office, according to White House reporter Keith Koffler.
