In an appearance on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) on Sunday continued his efforts to draw clear and distinct lines between the “old bulls” in the Republican Party and the class of freshmen many see as the “future” of the party.
McCain expressed opposition to filibuster a Senate gun-control measure — a potential effort led by Sen. Ted Cruz and supported by Sens. Rand Paul, Mike Lee and Marco Rubio among others — saying he did not “understand” the move to block debate.
“I don’t understand it,” McCain said. “The purpose of the United States Senate is to debate and to vote and to let the people know where we stand.”
Of course, McCain conveniently overlooks the reality that the Democratic Party has little interest in “honest” debate and will go to whatever lengths necessary to force it’s agenda through, as we clearly saw with Obamacare.
“What are we afraid of? Why would we not want… if this issue is as important as all of us think it is, why not take it to one of the world’s greatest deliberative bodies – that’s one of the greatest exaggerations in history by the way – but you know why not take it up, an amendment and debate. The American people will profit from it,” the Arizona senator said.
While McCain seems to have fallen victim to his own flattery, there is a simple answer to his question: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.
