When Barack Obama awarded Angelou the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011, he quoted her, saying, “History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again.” As he presented her the medal, he bent down and kissed her cheek, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The following year, the president called upon the poet fort her help when his re-election campaign appeared to be faltering and she responded with a letter to the party faithful.

Most recently, she was interviewed by Time Magazine. Noting that Angelou’s mother “often carried a gun,” she was asked if that fondness for firearms was passed on to her.

“Well, I do like to have guns around,” Angelou said. “I don’t like to carry them. But I like — if somebody is going to come into my house and I have not put out the welcome mat, I want to stop them.”

When asked if she had ever fired a gun, she said, “Of course!”

She then related an instance when she was alone in her North Carolina home.

“It was fall. I heard someone walking on the leaves. And somebody actually turned the knob. So I said, ‘Stand four feet back because I’m going to shoot now!’ Boom! Boom!”

Edited out of the video but reported by Fox News, Angelou added, “The police came by and said, ‘Ms. Angelou, the shots came from inside the house.’ I said, ‘Well, I don’t know how that happened.’”
