As North Korea continues to flex its military muscle, the hactivist group Anonymous is claiming the official Twitter and Flickr accounts of the North Korean government were hacked on Thursday, according to a Daily Mail UK report. This attack precedes one reportedly planned for Israel on Sunday.
North Korea’s Flickr page posted an image of Kim Jong Un portrayed as a pig with Mickey Mouse on his chest in a mock “wanted” poster, and tweets on the Twitter account said “hacked”, according to Daily Mail.
Anonymous posted a message online, according to the BBC:
To the citizens of North Korea we suggest to rise up and bring [this] oppressive government down!
We are holding your back and your hand, while you take the journey to freedom, democracy and peace.
You are not alone. Don’t fear us, we are not terrorist, we are the good guys from the internet. AnonKorea and all the other Anons are here to set you free.
This cyberattack comes on the heels of a similar incident on Israel’s government websites two weeks ago.
Anonymous announced last month that #OpIsrael plans to launch a cyberattack on April 7, and issued a press release reminder on Thursday:
To the government of Israel: You have NOT stopped your endless human right violations. You have NOT stopped illegal settlements. You have NOT respected the ceasefire. You have shown that you do NOT respect international law. This is why that on April 7, elite cyber-squadrons from around the world have decided to unite in solidarity with the Palestinian people against Israel as one entity to disrupt and erase Israel from cyberspace.
We are Anonymous.
We are Legion.
We do not forgive.
We do not forget.
To the Government of Israel, it is too late to EXPECT US.
#OpIsrael was launched last November during the conflict between Israel and the Gaza strip. Anonymous claims that “within hours of the launch there were thousands of defaces and hacks, databases released or deleted, dozens of disruptions to government sites and more.”
New warnings are already surfacing on Twitter:
In what could be a precursor to the event, Israel Hayom reports that 15,000 Israeli Facebook users’ computers were attacked Wednesday by virus that traveled through the social network.
“Israel is prepared and protected from cyberattacks. Not every virus is an attack,” the office of the national cyber bureau in the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement. The bureau says that vital infrastructure is secure and that they are working to stay a step ahead of the hackers.
