The lead member of Congress spearheading a federal ban on high-capacity magazines demonstrated Tuesday that she doesn’t have a clue as yo how they operate.
Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo., was asked at a gun control debate sponsored by the Denver Post how banning magazines exceeding a 15-round capacity would reduce gun violence, she replied:
“I will tell you these are ammunition, they’re bullets, so the people who have those now they’re going to shoot them, so if you ban them in the future, the number of these high capacity magazines is going to decrease dramatically over time because the bullets will have been shot and there won’t be any more available,” as reported by The Denver Post.
Apparently the congresswoman didn’t understand that magazines are designed to be reloaded — over and over again. Maybe she got her knowledge from watching films, where cops and robbers alike are typically depicted letting spent magazines drop to the ground as they insert a new one.
DeGette’s explanation was met with laughter from the audience.
The Post’s Allison Sherry noted:
Larimer County Sheriff Justin Smith, responding as the audience was laughing, urged people who hadn’t shot a gun to “get to the facts … Let’s be educated as we make this decision.”
The National Rifle Association was not quite as diplomatic Wednesday in response to DeGette’s comments.
“Two words — pretty stupid,” said NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam.
The congresswoman has pushed for a large-capacity magazine ban in twoCongresses, claiming it’s a top priority for her.
It seems to me that if you’re going to make something a top priority, you should at least take the time to learn something about it. It’s called being an informed lawmaker.
