Pension politics: If it ain’t broke, why fix it?

WillWeatherford

House Speaker Will Weatherford’s top  priority of
drastically overhauling the state employee-pension system is far less of a sure thing.

While Weatheford’s bill passed the House on a party-line vote, the Senate still favors a much tamer pension tinker, limiting a new pension system to elected officials and employees in senior management positions.

The Senate has yet to approve a final version of pension reform, but
State Senator Joseph Abruzzo said the current system doesn’t need major surgery. As it stands, he said, the state’s pension system is one of the best-funded in the country, noting the issue has become a “political football.”

“If it ain’t broke, why fix it?” he said.
