Matthews corrects Limbaugh on definition of racism

MSNBC host Chris Matthews called out Rush Limbaugh on the definition of racism on Hardball Monday. The problem is that Matthews’ definition isn’t exactly accurate – he thinks only whites are racist.

Limbaugh had agreed with a caller on his radio show earlier in the day during a discussion of the Rev. Luis Leon’s Easter Sunday service comments. The caller said that Leon was inspired to speak about the “captains of the religious right” while Obama was present.  Limbaugh commented:

That’s an interesting take that the President inspires it, inspires racism. It may well be the case. So Obama’s presence inspires this guy to go all divisive, all racist and start jamming on the Republicans for wanting blacks in the back of the bus and women back in the kitchen when he can’t name a single person who does. But the President of the United States, you may be right, may have inspired that in this preacher.

“Well actually, Rushbo, racism is the belief that one race – whites – should rule all others,” Matthews said. “Get your definitions straight.”

Newsbusters offered several definitions of racism, including one from the Anti-Defamation League:

Racism is the belief that a particular race is superior or inferior to another, that a person’s social and moral traits are predetermined by his or her inborn biological characteristics. […]

Racism has existed throughout human history. It may be defined as the hatred of one person by another — or the belief that another person is less than human — because of skin color, language, customs, place of birth or any factor that supposedly reveals the basic nature of that person. It has influenced wars, slavery, the formation of nations, and legal codes.

Maybe someone should send Matthews a dictionary.
