Wisc. student exposes political bullying by teachers

A Wisconsin high school freshman recently published an eye-opening article chronicling an ongoing campaign of bullying — not by fellow students but by teachers — for not toeing the progressive line.

School is not just a place for learning a curriculum of study, but also — perhaps more importantly — to learn how to think. From the recently published essay of 15-year-old Appleton resident Benji Backer, we now know that some instructors are no longer teaching how to think — but rather what to think.

He related that the harassment started when he was 12 and began receiving public notice for his GOP volunteer work. He recounted being repeatedly taken aside by one teacher in particular and told “how stupid, wrong and misguided [he] was for being Republican.”

Changing schools didn’t help.

Before the Scott Walker victory had completely died down, a substitute choir teacher presented a union propaganda video to the class, followed by a 10-minute lecture on the “failings” of Gov. Walker. Again, this was choir.

During the 2012 election, an English teacher occasionally spent large portions of class time talking politics and how Gov. Walker’s policies with respect to public unions affected him personally, leaving him with a teacher’s salary that was “too low to support his family.” A subsequent check of public records indicated he made over $100,000 a year. And we wonder why our students are failing.

Backer detailed the latest incident, this time in Civics class with a substitute teacher.

Every day we watch a ten minute show called CNN Student News. The substitute asked us to recap the show and discuss it in class. The first part of the show had to do with gun control. Instead of having us discuss the topics as she said she would, she decided to share her views. She talked almost twenty minutes. In those twenty minutes, she said the recently released picture of Obama shooting a gun was forced out by the conservative and far-right members. She explained how she believed Obama’s birth certificate was forced out, therefore this was too. For about five minutes, she called all Republicans racist. According to her, she had never seen such discrimination against a president and President Obama has been the most ill-treated president in the history of the United States, all because the Republicans don’t want a black man in the White House.

We should have seen it coming, but we didn’t. The signs were all there but have only recently come to the surface. Texas students being taught that 9/11 was our fault. Teachers pulling down and stomping on the American flag. Students being told to stomp on “Jesus.”

Students should once again be taught to think, reason and form their own opinions. That means their own thoughts and beliefs shouldn’t be ridiculed but rather encouraged.

I only hit a few of the highlights of young Mr. Backer’s experience with the public education system. Click FreedomWorks.org to read more.
