MSNBC gave up any pretense of being a legitimate news organization a long time ago. The network seems to have devolved into a weekly contest to see who came up with the most outrageous statement. Often Chris Matthews wins, sometimes Toure’ or Rachel Maddow. This time it was Melissa Harris-Perry’s turn with statements offered by one of her guests.
The panel began discussing the explosion of entitlement spending, including food stamps, but “quickly degenerated into an attack on corporate America,” according to Breitbart’s Larry O’Conner.
The panel came to a general consensus that entitlement programs were really a form of corporate welfare because welfare recipients spend their benefits at places like Walmart. Penn University’s Anthea Butler went so far as to say that Walmart enslaved its employees.
“This is like sharecropping,” she began. “Except this is a giant company store, right?”
So which is it? Is Walmart engaged in sharecropping or are they a company store? They’re two totally different concepts.
“And the company store is feeding itself off of both the government and the people that it’s enslaving.”
Okay, I guess we can add slave-owner to the mix now.
“So if you have this system that’s going in this constant circle of sharecropping, they’re robbing both sides. They’re robbing out government, and they’re robbing us. And they’re robbing us because they’re not even paying the taxes they’re supposed to pay.”
Butler’s remarks remind me of those made in February on the House floor by U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas: “I stand here as a freed slave.”
Butler’s field is religious studies — not business, economics or tax law — so I’m unclear as to where her expertise in these fields comes from. But then again, that’s the beauty of MSNBC — no one is expected to know what they’re talking about. They just have to deliver whatever cockamamie idea that happens to pop into their heads.
In the meantime, should Butler get tired lecturing on religious studies, she may want to consider a career in politics. It worked for Jackson-Lee.
