After being subdued with punches and a Taser, a “former” Nevada Democratic lawmaker was arrested at gunpoint Thursday on a freeway between Las Vegas and Los Angeles.
The arrest followed a high-speed chase that ended when police used spike strips to disable the vehicle.
Steven Brooks, was being held on $100,000 bail on four felony charges including resisting a police officer with force, willful harm to a police service dog, felony evading arrest and throwing objects from a vehicle with intent to harm, according to The Associated Press (AP).
Media reports identify Brooks as a “former” lawmaker, although Thursday’s arrest came only a few hours after he became the first person ever expelled from the Nevada Legislature as a result of his “potentially dangerous” behavior.
Lawmakers wept Thursday as they cited concerns about their own safety and evidence collected about Brooks’ increasingly bizarre behavior, as noted by AP.
The North Las Vegas Democrat was sworn in for his second term on Feb. 4, even though he had been arrested with a loaded gun just a few weeks earlier after threatening fellow Democratic Speaker-elect Marilyn Kirkpatrick because he was unhappy with his committee assignments.
Brooks was also arrested just days after being sworn in at his estranged wife’s home, where police say he tried to punch and grabbed for the gun of an officer responding to a domestic dispute
He was involuntarily hospitalized for five days for a mental evaluation back in January, and, according to police, tried unsuccessfully to purchase a gun at a northern Nevada sporting goods store in February.
