New York City Mayor Michael “Nanny” Bloomberg, via his Mayors Against Illegal Guns coalition, announced a $12 million national ad buy Saturday to pressure senators to back universal background checks for gun buyers.

At the same time, yet another member of this coalition, Gainesville, Fla., Mayor Craig Lowe, has been arrested in an alcohol related incident, as reported by the Washington Free Beacon.

Lowe, who appeared in a recent ad released by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, was arrested Thursday on charges of driving under the influence and property damage after police found him asleep in his car at the scene of a crash.

Police said Lowe appeared intoxicated and his vehicle was badly damaged.

The timing of the incident could not be worse, as Lowe finds himself in a runoff election on April 16 — he is scheduled for arraignment on April 11 — against Ed Braddy, who was featured recently in an editorial on BizPac Review.

As the Free Beacon points out, Lowe is not the first member of Mayors Against Illegal Firearms to have a run-in with the law:

Marcus Hook, Pa., Mayor James Schiliro (R.) was arrested for reckless endangerment and other criminal charges last week after he allegedly fired a handgun inside his home during a booze-fueled argument with a 20-year-old man. Schiliro had allegedly served the minor alcohol and demanded sexual favors when the dispute broke out.

Other members and former members of Mayors Against Illegal Guns have previously been charged with felony corruption, assault of a police officer, and child sex crimes.

It would seem that Mayors Against Illegal Guns would be better served to focus on alcohol abuse and violent behavior coming from elected officials than trying to restrict second amendment rights.

As for background checks, a good place to start is with the members of Mayors Against Illegal Guns.
