Senate Democrats vote to keep White House closed to public

Oklahoma Sen. Tom Coburn (R) offered up an amendment to a bill to finance the government through the end of the fiscal year that would have set aside $8 million to keep both the White House tour and several national parks open.

Unfortunately, Senate Democrats voted the amendment down Wednesday, which will keep the White House closed to the public, the Washington Times reports.

Coburn’s amendment was defeated on a 54-45 vote, the Times noted, with nearly every Republican voting to reopen the White House and with almost all Democrats voting to back President Obama’s decision to cancel the tours — a move he made earlier this month as one of the casualties of the budget sequesters.

The good news is Senators restored the military’s tuition assistance programs and adding back the money for food inspectors at slaughterhouses.

Overall, the $984 billion “continuing resolution” to keep the federal government running after March 27 passed by a vote of 73 to 26. The bill kept in place the $85 billion in cuts brought on from sequestration and makes additional across-the-board cuts of 1.9 percent to 2.5 percent in various categories of spending, according to the Huffington Post.

It will be interesting to see how much play the Democrat effort to keep the White House closed to the American public gets in the Obama-friendly media.
