Leave it to U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz to point out the most serious impact of sequester cuts: her $100,000 a year aides can no longer afford a “good meal” on Capitol Hill.
As the U.S. military frets that cuts have hurt readiness, as the White House closed its doors to public tours, as the scrooges in the Obama administration threaten to cancel the 135th Easter Egg Roll, Wasserman Schultz whined Tuesday at a House Appropriations Committee hearing “prices of meals in House restaurants are getting so high that aides are being ‘priced out’ of a good meal,” the Washington Examiner reported.
She and Democrat Rep. Jim Moran bemoaned the cuts to their personal budgets. According to the article, between the 11 percent cut, or $1.3 million, over the past two years, and an additional 8.2 percent, or $100,000 new cut, the “total cut over three years: nearly 20 percent.”
“If it’s a $100,000 reduction in your [allowance] you really need to start preparing for a staff change,” Moran said, according to the article. “That’s a whole person!”
Wasserman Schultz added the cuts “have lessened the attractiveness of Hill jobs,” the Examiner said. “The more we rob Peter to pay Paul,” she said, “the tougher it is for us to compete not only with the private sector but with other federal agencies.”
The Examiner explained Louisiana Republican Rep. Rodney Alexander, chairman of the House Appropriations subcommittee on legislative affairs, “shrugged off concerns about staffs and budgets, noting that he ‘made the necessary adjustments,’ including axing four aides.”
But the typical Democrats solution to funnel money back to the House so staff doesn’t need to be cut, or worse, that aides don’t have to pack peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch?
[G]ive up its $3 million legal defense of the controversial Defense of Marriage Act, now before the Supreme Court, and divert the money back into House operations.
