Fla. seafood sales top $18 million at Boston trade event

While the Florida seafood industry has had their share of problems in recent years, seven Florida companies sold more than $18 million of seafood products at the International Boston Seafood Show this month, with support from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

Adam Putnam Ag Commissioner“Florida boasts a wide variety of high-quality seafood products,” Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam said in a statement. “We’re proud to bring Florida companies to Boston where they can showcase their seafood products for buyers from around the world.”

The three-day International Boston Seafood Show is North America’s largest seafood trade event, drawing 19,000 buyers and sellers from more than 100 countries and over 1000 exhibiting companies, according to BostonSeafood.com.  Seven Florida companies attended the event at the Boston Convention and Exposition Center:

  • Shaw’s Southern Belle Frozen Foods
  • Ariel Seafoods
  • Frenchy’s Stone Crab Company
  • Rod’s Seafood
  • Southeastern SeaProducts
  • Water Street Seafood
  • Wood’s Fisheries

On display were snapper, grouper, king mackerel, Spanish mackerel, spiny lobster, stone crab claws, farm-raised shrimp, oysters, farm-raised clams, blue crab and wild-caught shrimp, according to Putnam’s office. Also on hand was Chef Justin Timineri, Florida’s Culinary Ambassador, to cook samples for interested buyers.

According to the department this is the 23rd year they have assisted seafood suppliers who want to participate:

Florida ranks among the top 12 states in the nation for fresh seafood production, harvesting more than 100 million pounds of seafood annually, including all of the nation’s spiny lobster, 97 percent of stone crabs and 84 percent of grouper, pompano, mullet, pink shrimp and Spanish mackerel. More than 85 different varieties of seafood are harvested in Florida.
