Muslim extremists are big on anniversaries. On the 11th anniversary of 9/11, they stormed our consulate and security annex in Benghazi, Libya and murdered four Americans in the process.

Likewise, they’re commemorating Tuesday, Mar. 19th as the 10th anniversary of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq with fireworks — car bombs and suicide bombers. The toll so far is an estimated 50 deaths and 150 injured.

Mary Casey andf Jennifer Parke for Foreign Policy note:

At least 10 car bombs were set off in a coordinated campaign which targeted busy areas in predominantly Shiite neighborhoods including a market, bus stops, and the Green Zone, which houses government offices and foreign embassies.

Additionally, a suicide bomber attacked a police base in a Shiite town south of Baghdad and three improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were set off in the northern region of Kirkuk.

So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the violence, however since coalition forces left Iraq, al-Qaida-linked Sunni insurgents have steadily regained a foothold in the region.

The Iraqi branch of al-Qaidi, known as the Islamic State of Iraq, “has vowed to increase attacks on Shiite targets in attempts to undermine the government of Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki,” notes Foreign Policy.

Adding to the concern is the increasing immigration of Syrian refugees flooding Iraq since civil war broke out in Syria.

One can only wonder what they have planned for the 11th anniversary.
