In preparation for an upcoming Mideast trip, President Barack Obama met on Monday with and received “recommendations” from representatives of several Pro-Hezbollah advocacy groups.
Of the 10 Muslim or Arab leaders the president met with, two — from the Muslim Public Affairs Council and the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee — have a record of anti-Israeli and pro-Hezbollah sentiments, according to FrontPageMag.com.
The Mag’s Ryan Mauro wrote Tuesday:
A joint press release by the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), American Task Force for Palestine, American Federation of Ramallah Palestine and the Arab-American Institute boasted of the meeting. Separately, the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) alerted its supporters that the director of its Washington D.C. office, Haris Tarin, also attended. He was previously thanked by President Obama in a personal phone call for his activism on July 13, 2011. The ADC earlier tried to get President Obama’s attention by helping to organize an interfaith “No Blank Check for Israel” rally in the capital near Inauguration Day.
Also attending the meeting were “unidentified national security officials” and senior presidential advisor Valerie Jarrett. Mauro notes that Jarrett served as “keynote speaker at the 2009 annual convention of the Islamic Society of North America, a group with Muslim Brotherhood origins.”
The report goes on to state that the ADC was founded by former U.S. Sen. James Abourezk,
the first Arab-American Senator, who praised Hezbollah during its war with Israel in 2006. He also has stated that Zionists were secretly behind the 9/11 attacks. The ADC leadership opposed its designation as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. In 2000, an ADC spokesperson called Hezbollah a “responsible liberation force.” The ADC also honored Helen Thomas after she said the Jews in Israel should “get the hell out of Palestine” and go to Poland.
The United States, Canada and Israel are among those nations that classify Hezbollah strictly as a terrorist organization.
MPAC, the second questionable group represented at the meeting, objected to both Hamas and Hezbollah being condemned as “terrorist groups in a 2003 policy paper. On the other hand, it called Israel a state sponsor of terrorism in 2001.”
Although the president previously met with pro-Israeli leaders to prepare for his trip, the Mag’s Mauro notes that, “The meeting with President Obama to provide policy ‘recommendations’ [from pro-Hezbollah leaders] is unsettling.”
The Obama administration has, in the past, opened negotiations with the Taliban, another group on an international list of terror organizations. Recently, talks between newly confirmed Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and Afghan President Hamid Karzai came to a close when Karzai accused the Obama administration of secret negotiations with the Taliban.
