Monday morning on Fox News, Jordan Sekulow from the American Center for Law and Justice announced the latest developments in the Pastor Saeed Abedin case, the American arrested in Iran and has spent months locked up in a notoriously dangerous prison on charges of trying to spread Christianity throughout the country.
Sekulow reported that there will now be a hearing before the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission, a bipartisan House committee the stated mission of which “is to promote, defend and advocate internationally recognized human rights norms in a nonpartisan manner, both within and outside of Congress.”
Sekulow told Fox anchor Martha MacCallum that the American Center for Law and Justice has been invited by the commission to present evidence in the Abedini case on Friday. Also present will be members of the U.S. State Department who, Sekulow said will be “subject to questioning by members of the commission,” according to Fox News.
“This can be what we’re working towards,” said Sekulow, and stressed the need for government intervention. “His life is in jeopardy. He’s suffering right now from internal bleeding, he’s not getting the medical care he needs.
MacCallum noted that Iran has shown little inclination so far to released the imprisoned pastor and asked why he felt this may be a turning point.
“We were successful with the hikers,” he said, and explained that the administration pressed Iran more strongly for them and others who were eventually released.
The White House has dragged its feet so far in the Abedini case and “This administration has ignored calls from Congress, both the House — bipartisan calls to do more — and the Senate,” Sekilow noted, adding that so far, the president hasn’t gotten personally involved.
“He had a right to be there,” he said. “He didn’t violate any laws by going in. He was cleared to go in. His orphanage has been cleared.”
