After the White House announced that tours would be canceled, groups all over the country who have been fundraising and planning for months are left in the lurch. One group of sixth-graders from Iowa is not giving up without a fight.
“It’s a major disappointment for them,” Karen Thalacker, the mother of 12-year-old Malcom Newell, told ABC News. “Our kids have done everything we have asked them to do and more. Now for us to say something out of our control is making their White House trip impossible is really disappointing.”
So the 16 sixth-graders at St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Waverly have launched a Facebook campaign to get the White House to reconsider. “The White House is our house! Please let us visit!” is their message.
“We’re not here to pick sides about who’s right and who’s wrong. We’d just like the people’s house to stay open so that not just our group but groups all across the country can come and visit the White House,” Thalacker told ABC News. “It’s very important. They’ll remember it for the rest of their lives. And unfortunately they may remember that this is a sign of their government if they didn’t get to go.”
Thalacker says they have received a tremendous amount of support and are glad they have had the opportunity to be a part of the national debate.
“We’d love to have the American people come and visit their Capitol,” Boehner told reporters at a news conference Thursday, according to AP. “I think it’s disappointing that the Obama administration didn’t follow our lead and find savings in other parts of their budget. I think it’s silly that they’ve insisted on locking down the White House, which the American people actually own.”
