House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., told reporters at a press briefing Thursday that government must cut spending, and went on to tell reporters that “Tax cuts are spending.”

“So, when we talk about reducing spending, we certainly must, and we certainly have — $1.6 trillion in the previous Congress, $1.2 of it in the Budget Control Act,” said Pelosi as reported by CNSNews.

“But spending is also related to tax cuts. Tax cuts are spending. Tax expenditures, they are called. Subsidies for big oil, subsidies to send jobs overseas, breaks to send jobs overseas, breaks for corporate jets. They are called tax expenditures. Spending money on tax breaks.”

“And that’s the spending that we must curtail as well,” she said.

At the 2010 Legislative Conference for the National Association of Counties, Pelosi infamously said of the Affordable Care Act, “But we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it.”

Early last month, Pelosi denied that Washington had a spending problem altogether during an appearance on “Fox News Sunday.”

“It is almost a false argument to say we have a spending problem,” Pelosi told host Chris Wallace at that time. “We have a budget deficit problem that we have to address.”

She voiced her concern later last month that if sequester cuts were to be implemented, they could lead to a reduction in congressional salaries, which she thought would diminish lawmakers’ dignity.

Pelosi first became a member of Congress in 1987, and the people of the San Francisco area have re-elected her every two years since then.
