Alarming 80% of NYC high schoolers not prepared for college

While New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg ponders what he will ban next, perhaps he should consider a new report showing 80 percent of city high school graduates don’t have the remedial skills to handle college-level classes.

It’s an incredible statistic: “Nearly 80 percent of New York City high school graduates need to relearn basic skills before they can enter the City University’s community college system,” CBS New York reported.

According to the report, 80 percent is the equivalent of approximately 11,000 high school graduates — the “highest in years.”

City University of New York started a program called “CUNY Start” to help students relearn the basics – reading, writing and math – to prepare them for college.

“[Students] get lost sometimes in the classroom and in CUNY Start we give them a lot more one-on-one attention, small group work,” Sherry Mason, one of the CUNY Start’s writing teachers, told the TV station. “It helps them achieve more in a short amount of time and so they’re able to get on with their credit classes.”

The Daily Caller reported an interesting fact of its own while taking a dig at Bloomberg for ignoring the alarming statistic:

While nearly 80 percent of students who graduate from New York Public Schools can’t read well enough to attend community college, they can at least frolic in all the unprotected sex they want without fretting over the natural consequences.

The Bloomberg administration used 40 individual “school-based health centers” to lavish nearly 13,000 free doses of Plan B — the “morning-after pill” — on students during the 2011-12 school year.
