Amanda Collins, who was brutally raped in 2007 at the Reno campus of University of Nevada, testified before the Colorado Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday.
At the time she was attacked, Collins was within 50 feet of a police station and had only moments before left a group of friends. Although she possessed a concealed carry permit, she wasn’t carrying her 9mm Glock — she was in a “gun free zone” and didn’t want to break the law.
Here rapist went on to sexually assault other young women and then graduated to murder before he was finally stopped.
After describing her encounter with the rapist, she closed her testimony before the committee with these words:
“Soon, what I have described to you will fade into your memory and you probably won’t think about it again. But I can’t pray it away. I live every day with implication being a survivor of rape and what they have on my life, which I can’t go into because of time constraints. And as I live with the memory, weighted with the question of my life, ‘What would have been different had I been carrying the weapon I was licensed to carry that night?’”
She then turned the questioning to the panel.
“I would like to leave you with a question: How does rendering me defenseless protect you against a violent crime?”
Democratic state Sen. Evie Hudak called Collins’ testimony “unsettling” and then attacked it.
“You said that you were a martial arts student, I mean person, experienced in Tae Kwon Do, and yet because this individual was so large, was able to overcome you even with your skills, and chances are that if you had had a gun, then he would have been able to get that from you and possibly use it against you,” and then added that statistics weren’t on her side.
“Respectfully senator, you weren’t there,” Collins replied. “Had I been carrying concealed, he wouldn’t have known I had my weapon; and I was there. I know without a doubt in my mind at some point I would’ve been able to stop my attack by using my firearm.”
