America’s Promise Alliance has released its 2013 Building a Grad Nation report, highlighting the nation’s high schools in which 12th-grade enrollment is 60 percent or less of 9th-grade enrollment three years earlier. These schools are referred to as “dropout factories”.
America’s Promise Alliance released the following:
The report shows that in the most recent year studied, 2011, Florida had 30 fewer dropout factories, with 55,066 fewer students attending high-dropout schools than the previous year. This brings the total of closed dropout factories to 93 since 2002, going from 162 to 69, and representing 185,652 fewer students attending them.
“These results are fantastic,” said Patricia Levesque, executive director of the Foundation for Florida’s Future. “Thanks to the hard work of Florida’s teachers in and outside of the classroom, we are paving the way toward brighter futures for today’s students. Our state’s transformation over the years, including movements toward higher standards, stronger accountability, and high-quality educational choices, continues to improve student outcomes. Failure should not be an option for any student – signs more are finishing school show us Florida is on the right track and is equipping more students for success.”
The Grad Nation movement describes itself as a dedicated group of individuals, organizations and communities working together to end America’s dropout crisis. Its goals include achieving a 90 percent graduation rate nationwide by 2020, with no high school graduating less than 80 percent of its students.
