In an apparent case of gamesmanship, the White House initially sent senators investigating the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi a set of requested documents that were redacted to the point of being what some deemed “worthless.”
The Senate Intelligence Committee, according to Fox News, requested emails and other documentation relative to the White House’s Benghazi “talking points.”
“It was so redacted that there was no information whatsoever,” said a source who spoke to Fox on condition of anonymity. “There were some documents that were 100 pages with every word on the page redacted. They were worthless.”
After that set of documents was returned, a second set was almost immediately delivered with minimal redactions, causing the source to speculate the White House had both sets prepared from the beginning.
The second set was revealing. According to Fox News:
The talking points evolved as they were passed around various intelligence and security hubs, and scrubbed of language referring to “al Qa’ida.” They also seemed to indicate an effort to paint the Sept. 11 attack as a demonstration and not a planned attack, the source said.
On a related front, Republican Reps. Frank Wolf of Virginia and Jim Gerlach of Pennsylvania sent a letter to new Secretary of State John Kerry requesting “the names and contact information to all the State Department employees who survived the Benghazi attack,” according to Breitbart.com.
The letter began by reminding Kerry that “next week marks the six month anniversary of the deadly terrorist attacks on the U.S. consulate and annex in Benghazi, which took the lives of four Americans and injured untold others. It is the ‘others’ about which we write.”
The letter said a reliable source told Wolf that “as many as 30 Americans (including State Department and CIA personnel and government contractors) may have been injured in the attack,” and “that there are wounded American personnel, including State Department employees, currently in rehabilitation and recovery at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.”
I can’t help but feel that in another time and during another presidential administration, information about the deaths of four Americans would have been made available long ago. The gamesmanship being played by the White House is a disgrace to the memories of Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, Glen Doherty, Tyrone Woods and Sean Smith.
