Is sequestration a tea party victory?

As Florida Gov. Rick Scott continues his politically expedient migration to the middle, the latest clue being his comments on the potential effects of sequestration, it’s only fitting that the Washington Post serves up these “dramatic” spending cuts as a victory for the tea party.

In an article that reads like a set-up, the Post suggests the “tea party’s legions in Washington” are getting what they want with sequestration, characterizing these cuts as “a high-stakes test of whether significant cuts in spending will help or hurt the economy.”

So, there you have it. Yet another scapegoat for President Barack Obama, should his economic policies continue to fail as they did throughout his first term. Only now, we can expect the progressive left to use this failure to eschew any further talk of fiscal responsibility.

Scott released his statement Friday, yet, his comments sound eerily similar to what other governors around the country had to say after an hour-long private meeting with the president Monday at the annual National Governor’s Association meeting in Washington, D.C.

In appealing to the nation’s governors to help pressure Congress to reach an agreement to avert the looming sequester cuts, as reported by The Hill, Obama said, “The American people have worked too hard for too long rebuilding from one crisis only to see their elected officials cause another.”

But should that read elected official, as in singular.

What you will not see mentioned often in the Obama obsessed media is that sequestration was his idea, passed in Congress with the support of many Democrat lawmakers and signed into law by the very man now trying to shift the blame back on Congress. The same man who vowed to veto any efforts to forgo sequestration.

You will also see little effort to put these cuts into perspective, cuts that represent less than the federal government borrows in a month.

Obama’s job now is to sell the American people on the “devastation” a 2.4% cut in spending will bring upon the land. To hear him tell it, we should expect to see locusts falling from the sky. Never mind that these “cuts” come out of a budget that’s already scheduled to increase more than the cuts amount to, according to Redstate.

Nonetheless, the American public has thus far been only too willing to buy what this president is selling.

As the Washington Post endeavors to redirect the responsibility of sequestration to the tea party, “represented by a group of Republicans elected in 2010,” it unknowingly acknowledges that all the previous spending cuts have been little more than smoke and mirrors.

In commenting on the influence of the tea party, the article states:

The push to slash the budget led to several battles with the White House, which would agree to cuts that were only a small fraction of what tea party members and other conservatives demanded. Many of the reductions did little to actually slow government spending.

In the end, if the people in this country, to include a Republican governor, are not willing to look beyond the propaganda and endure a cut of less than 3 percent, then default is the only possible outcome for America. And that will hurt quite a bit more.
