ABC covers for Michelle Obama’s misinformation on shooting of teen from inauguration

ABC offered a ridiculous explanation for editing Michelle Obama’s incorrect statement that an automatic weapon was used in a Chicago teen’s shooting death on Tuesday’s “Good Morning America.”

The first lady sat for an interview with Robin Roberts, and among other topics, discussed the Chicago shooting death of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton shortly after she performed in the Inaugural ceremony in Washington, D.C.

The Washington Examiner reported the first lady incorrectly stated Pendleton “was caught in the line of fire because some kids had some automatic weapons they didn’t need.”

However, according to the Examiner, the Associated Press reported Pendleton was actually shot by a man with a handgun who fled into a waiting car.

“Good Morning America” edited out the automatic weapon comment before airing the broadcast.

The Examiner posted both transcribed versions in its Tuesday article. The version ABC put on its website after the broadcast shows the full statement made by the first lady:

[Pendleton] was standing out in a park with her friends in a neighborhood blocks away from where my kids…grew up, where our house is. She had just taken a chemistry test. And she was caught in the line of fire because some kids had some automatic weapons they didn’t need,” she said. “I just don’t want to keep disappointing our kids in this country. I want them to know that we put them first.

The version that went into the broadcast shows what ABC edited out:

[Pendleton] was standing out in a park with her friends in a neighborhood blocks away from where my kids grow – grew – up, where our house is. She had just taken a chemistry test. And she was caught in the line of fire because some kids had some automatic weapons they didn’t need. I just don’t want to keep disappointing our kids in this country. I want them to know that we put them first.

Mediaite contacted ABC for an explanation of why the first lady’s comment was edited. An ABC spokesperson told Mediaite the edit was made “solely due to broadcast time constraints:”

The full story was posted to our website in advance of the interview being broadcast. The edits made to Robin’s interview with the First Lady were made solely for time.
