New Hampshire, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Maryland are but a few states that should consider themselves on notice. Texas and Mississippi are rolling out the red carpet for ammunition and firearm companies, letting them know that if things get too politically sticky where they’re at, they should come on down where they’re appreciated.
In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, lawmakers are dropping everything else to propose a flurry of new gun legislation — much of it highly restrictive. As a result, respected armorers like Beretta USA, which supplies weapons to America’s military, are no longer feeling the love and are making threats to move to greener pastures.
Magpul Industries has placed its home state of Colorado on notice that it, too, will be leaving if lawmakers pass a gun proposal that would include a ban on high-capacity magazines, the very thing Magpul manufacturers.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry told Magpul in a letter that there is no other state “that fits the definition of business-friendly like Texas,” according to Fox News.
Although gunmaker Mossberg & Sons maintains some facilities in Texas, it’s headquartered in Connecticut.
“As you consider your options for responding to unwarranted government intrusion into your business, you may choose to consider relocating your manufacturing operations to a state that is more business-friendly,” Perry’s letter to Mossberg said.
Mississippi House Speaker Philip Gunn has also been busy, reportedly penning letters to 14 firearm manufacturers..
“I am personally inviting you and your company to come to the great state of Mississippi,” Gunn wrote in a letter to Colt’s Manufacturing Co. in Connecticut. “In our state, you will not be criticized for providing good to the law abiding citizens who enjoy hunting, shooting or who just want the peace of mind that comes with the constitutional right to protect their families.”
Fox reported:
Leaders from other states have sent letters to some or all of the companies asking them to come to their homes. U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, a Republican, has made an overture. Also chiming in have been U.S. Rep. Jeff Duncan, R-S.C., and officials from Alabama, Idaho, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Wyoming.
Gunn’s list also included the American unit of SIG Sauer in New Hampshire and North Carolina’s Remington Arms Co. Both those states have little apparent movement toward tighter restrictions on guns and ammunition.
To all those lawmakers who have proposed anti-gun legislation, I can say only one thing — be careful of what you ask for.
