Complacency gives Al Jazeera free rein in America

Drip, drip, drip. There’s an insidious evolutionary trend taking place in the United States — the Islamification of America.

What’s worse, since Americans want to be known as a tolerant society, we’re lying down and allowing it to happen.

When former Vice President Al Gore and his business partner sold their interest in the failing cable network, Current TV, to Al Jezeera, we heard plenty of jokes but saw barely a ripple of protest. Al Jazeera is the Middle Eastern news service wholly funded by the government of Qatar. The emir of Qatar also contributes heavily to Hamas and Hezbollah, which the United States regards as terrorist organizations.

Even conservative U.S. Rep. Steve Scalia, R-La., gave the sale a pass. Scalia is chairman of the Republican Study Committee, which its website describes as “a group of House Republicans organized for the purpose of advancing a conservative social and economic agenda in the House of Representatives.”

Tolerance is an American trait that forms the basis for the First Amendment. As an American, I consider myself tolerant, but tolerance should never be confused with acquiescence.

Al Jazeera is the news agency that cheered on Osama bin Laden when his henchmen flew commercial jetliners into the twin towers of the World Trade Center and murdered close to 3,000 innocent people. Yet today, in the spirit of tolerance and possibly out of fear of being labeled Islamophobes, we give the Current TV sale a pass.

Until the sale, Al Jazeera had tried unsuccessfully for years to find a permanent foothold in the United States.

“Imagine six or seven years ago, trying to find real estate for Al Jazeera in Washington,” Rob Wheelock gushed, according to American Spectator. “We’re going to have signage just like CBS, ABC, CNN, CBN, just like everyone else. We’re psyched.”

Wheelock is the former ABC executive in charge of establishing Al Jazeera in the United States.

American Spectator’s Andrew B. Wilson wrote:

Even now, with the beginning of the second Obama term, Sheik Hamad bin khalifa Al Thani, the ruler of Qatar, must be rubbing his goatee in disbelief at how easy it is to open a large propaganda network in the United States of America (which, at the outset, will include seven “investigative reporters” in the D.C. office for the presumed purpose of vilifying legislators who oppose Islamic extremism or support Israel).

Al Jazeera has been operating as a news agency in the United States for years without registering as a foreign agent, as required by law. Florida journalist Jerry Kenney filed complaints last fall with the U.S. Justice Department and the Federal Communications Commission over Al Jazeera broadcasting its programming illegallly to the United States.

So what can we do about it? I recall Neil Cavuto telling viewers that if their cable or satellite TV provider didn’t carry Fox Business Network, they should “demand it!”

I suggest the exact opposite. Although I’m not a fan of boycotts, if your provider includes “Al Jazeera America” in its lineup, you should demand its removal. Let them the company know that if it refuses, you’ll take your business elsewhere.

We should never acquiesce simply because it’s politically correct. As for concern about being labeled an Islamophobe, defines “phobia” as “a persistent, irrational fear of a specific object, activity, or situation that leads to a compelling desire to avoid it.”

There’s nothing irrational about fearing an organization that has consistently cheered on our enemies. I just don’t want to wake up one morning and discover that “Al Jazeera America” has become Al Jazeera’s America.
