Gary Doer, Canada’s ambassador to the United States, believes the press is doing the public a huge disservice by covering demonstrations against the Keystone XL pipeline over the good the project will do.
“Twenty people protesting do get more attention in the media than the 65 percent of Americans that prefer to get their oil from Canada rather than Venezuela or the Middle East,” Doer said in a Platts Energy Week TV interview, according to The Hill. “So am I concerned about the fact that sometimes the media will go with a picture as opposed to, sometimes, logic? That’s just part of how issues are covered.”
On Wednesday, about 50 people protested the pipeline outside the White House, most notably actress Daryl Hannah and civil-rights activist Julian Bond. In addition, roughly 35,000 protesters huddled in the cold at the Washington National Mall to demonstrate against the pipeline — and, ironically, global warming.
The Keystone project’s main offense is that greenhouse gases will be released into the atmosphere by the burning of fossil fuels.
What the protesters fail to recognize, however, is that rejecting the pipeline project isn’t going to stop the Alberta oil sands project. Crude will continue to be extracted, refined and burned. The only question will be who gets it.
Doer also argued that the pipeline will add to America’s energy security. Current estimates put the reserves at 170 billion barrels of crude. It would also bring new U.S. jobs – up to 15,000, by project developer TransCanada’s estimates.
