President Barack Obama took first lady Michelle out in style for Valentine’s Day with dinner at Spanish chef Jose Andres’ MiniBar restaurant in D.C. The exclusive eatery only has seating for 12, and its prices reflect that fact.
The happy couple dined on one of MiniBar’s famous $225, 20-course tasting menus, dcist.com reported. Although it’s unknown what beverage the Obamas enjoyed with their meal, the four choices range from $45 to $200 per person.
I would be the last person to force $45-a-glass swill on our commander-in-chief. On the other hand, I’m sure the president considers himself to be a fiscally responsible person and steered clear of the high-priced stuff.
Therefore, assuming they opted for a middle ground on beverage choice, that would come to $122.50 per person, plus $225 for the tasting menu, for a total of $347.50 apiece, or $695, not including tax and tip.
If we add a 20 percent tip of $139, that brings the Obamas’ restaurant tab up to $834, excluding taxes. And that’s just the money part of it. Area businesses and residents also paid a price, in inconvenience. DMVFollowers.com reported:
[Obama’s] date night probably ruined Valentine’s Day for a lot of other couples. You see, “Minibar” is smack in the middle of DC’s busy Penn Quarter neighborhood, and date night for the Obamas requires shutting down a city block and bringing rush-hour traffic to a screeching halt.
On the White House website, the president wrote on Christmas Day, “So many of you make sacrifices day in and day out on behalf of our freedom, on behalf of our security.” I guess that “sacrifice” thing doesn’t apply to the president and the first lady.
