Obamacare inspires shocking doctor shortage solution in Calif.

Obamacare will result in a serious shortage of doctors — especially primary-care physicians. California has come up with a unique — I would say preposterous — solution to the problem.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will add a huge number of newly-insured patients, which will in turn create a shortage of doctors to take care of them.

Add to that, a 2009 Investors Business Daily poll indicated that four out of nine doctors said they “would consider leaving their practice or taking an early retirement” if Congress passed ObamaCare.

The newspaper ran a follow-up the following year that confirmed the 2009 results. The 2010 survey also indicated “that they expected fewer students to apply for medical school in the future if the plan became law,” compounding the physician shortage problem.

Compounding the problem are the many people migrating out of high-tax states in favor of more tax-friendly Texas and Florida, and all at once, states like California have a real problem on their hands.

California could have come up with a lot of answers to the problem — tax breaks for physicians willing to move, offers to pay all or part of a doctor’s student loans, for example. But the state did no such thing.

California changed the definition of “primary-care provider.”

Those people now authorized to provide primary medical care in California will “include physician assistants, pharmacists, and even optometrists,” according to Townhall.

Doctors say this could greatly threaten patient safety. But, at a meeting for healthcare advocates this past December, Diana Dooley, Secretary of the California Health and Human Services Agency, said “We’re going to have to provide care at lower levels. I think a lot of people are trained to do work that our licenses don’t allow them to.”

Sorry, but no matter how hard I try, I just can’t see myself going to Walgreens or LensCrafters about a lump in my groin. I think maybe they’ve been prescribing themselves a tad too much of that medical marijuana.
