Being selected to give the opposition party’s rebuttal to a State of the Union address is generally seen as an unenviable job, one that draws more sympathy than partisan attacks.
For starters, it’s nearly impossible to match the pageantry of a national address delivered before a joint session of Congress.
Yet, in what could be an unprecedented move, the Democratic National Committee has offered what Yahoo News is calling a “prebuttal” to Sen. Marco Rubio‘s not-yet-delivered Republican rebuttal to President Obama’s Tuesday night address.
Never mind that the Democrats have no idea what Rubio is going to say.
“Given the late hour [scheduled for Rubio’s on-camera response] we thought this would be a good opportunity for us to make some comments about what we anticipate based on the record that we have that Sen. Rubio is likely to address and how we would respond to that,” DNC spokesman Brad Woodhouse said Monday on a conference call with reporters, according to Yahoo News.
As we learned from former Alaskan Gov. Sarah Palin, it’s not hard to determine who the Democrats are most concerned with when it comes to Republican rivals. No politician on the right has faced the unprecedented level of opposition Palin has, but Rubio may be getting close.
How rabid are the Democrats in trying to upstage the rising Republican star?
They were caught trying to “deceive” the media on Monday’s call by presenting a party official from Florida as “a Medicare recipient” bent on criticizing Rubio — a call hosted by DNC chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz and U.S. Rep. Chris Van Hollen.
The Daily Caller reported:
But it turns out that the DNC was hiding pertinent information about [her] background: She is not just your average senior citizen in Florida. She is a former leader of the St. Johns Democratic Party and a state Democratic committeewoman.
Wasserman Schultz added the typical Democratic talking points, alleging Rubio wanted to “gut Medicaid” and “devastate seniors” and saying he’ll put “nursing homes at risk” and may eliminate services for “disabled children.” About the only thing she missed was kicking puppy dogs.
Another indication of the Palin-esque level of vitriol Rubio is experiencing comes from a top assistant to Spanish-language channel Univision’s vice president of news, who attacked Rubio via Facebook after learning he would be delivering the GOP’s reply to Obama.
“Oh. wow, the loser is going to speak after our President,” the assistant posted Wednesday. “Anything to get publicity. Ask him to do us a favor and stay home that night.”
As Rubio takes on the challenge of trying to capture the nation’s attention under difficult circumstances tonight, it’s clear he already has the attention of the Democratic Party and its supporters.
