Former diplomat Paul Bremer had shoes and insults hurled at him during a meeting at the British Parliament Wednesday.
Bremer, once the U.S. envoy to Iraq, was speaking to members of the Henry Jackson Society, an English think tank, when an Arab man threw two shoes as a show of disrespect and disapproval, saying they came “from Saddam Hussein and the Iraqi people.”
Bremer was quick with his reflexes and his response.
“You should improve your aim if you want to do something like that,” he said, attempting to catch the second shoe after ducking the first.
The attacker was removed while shouting profanity and accusing the United States of destroying Iraq.
A composed Bremer used the incident as a teachable moment.
“If he had done that while Saddam Hussein was alive, he would be a dead man right now,” he said.
Bremer may have learned how to handle the flying footwear from his former boss, President George W. Bush, who famously ducked two shoes thrown at him by an Iraqi journalist in 2008.
