When Texas Gov. Rick Perry signed S.B. 7 in July 2011, effectively defunding Planned Parenthood, he earned the respect of pro-life activists and gained the ire of feminist Gloria Steinem.
Before delivering the keynote speech at the annual Planned Parenthood Luncheon in Fort Worth on Friday, Steinem spoke to the Star-Telegram.
“He personally will go down in history as an authoritarian, a dictatorial, unacceptable American,” Steinem told the newspaper. “This does not compensate for the women who are suffering from the lack of health care because of his actions and the amounts of federal funds this state has lost because of his actions.”
Steinem suggested that Texans “dis-elect him, get rid of him, get rid of the guy,” the Telegram reported. “Can’t you impeach him?”
Perry is strongly pro-life. In order to be able to defund abortions in Texas, he had to reject federal health care funds because of the strings that came attached.

In lieu of federal money, Texas has founded its own program for health care for the poor, one that excludes any provider that performs abortions. Planned Parenthood sued to stop the state, but a federal court upheld the state’s actions. Since then, fourteen Planned Parenthood clinics in the state have closed their doors.
As a result, Planned Parenthood estimates that there could be 23,760 additional births to Medicaid eligible women in Texas, potentially costing taxpayers millions.
The governor’s somewhat complicated machinations have made him the target of America’s most famous feminist.
Somehow, though, I don’t think Perry much cares what Steinem thinks about him.
