Ron Paul forced to clarify outrageous tweet on sniper’s murder

Former U.S. Rep. Ron Paul took some flack Monday for a disrespectful tweet about the murder of U.S. Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle.

“Chris Kyle’s death seems to confirm that ‘he who lives by the sword dies by the sword.’ Treating PTSD at a firing range doesn’t make sense,” Paul wrote on Twitter.

While it is still unclear at this time, police believe former Marine Eddie Routh, the suspect in Saturday’s double murder of Kyle and a friend at a Texas shooting range, may have been suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Criticism of Paul’s tweet came quickly and continued throughout Tuesday.

Glenn Beck tweeted: “Newest member of the Westboro Baptist Church: Ron Paul. I am with Marcus Latrell & grieving family members. Will respond tomorrow. SHAMEFUL.”

Another tweet came from Joe the Plumber ‏: “@RonPaul U obviously Don’t understand PTSD, & UR comments hurt our Heros. Outdoor Recreational Therapy helps a lot of our Veterans.”

Though he is a veteran, Paul is not a psychiatrist, to my knowledge, so how he can say going to a shooting range to treat PTSD doesn’t make sense? ABC World News reported that 20 percent of troops returning from overseas suffer from the disorder. “One treatment approach involves the slow, steady, re-exposure of patients to their PTSD triggers,” George Everly, an associate professor of psychiatry at Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, told the network.

By Monday evening, Paul was forced to clarify his tweet via a message on his Facebook page:

As a veteran, I certainly recognize that this weekend’s violence and killing of Chris Kyle were a tragic and sad event. My condolences and prayers go out to Mr. Kyle’s family. Unconstitutional and unnecessary wars have endless unintended consequences. A policy of non-violence, as Christ preached, would have prevented this and similar tragedies. –REP

Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who rolled my eyes rather than get angry at Paul’s comment. My favorite Twitter response came from @iowahawkblog: “Grandpa’s talking to the furniture again.” Yes, he always is.
