Decorated former U.S. Navy SEAL and “American Sniper” author Chris Kyle was dedicating his life to helping veterans suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. He often took fellow veterans with the condition to the shooting range, though it is unclear at this time if Kyle’s killer, former Marine Eddie Routh, had PTSD.
ABC World News reported Sunday that nearly 20 percent of returning soldiers from our wars overseas are diagnosed with PTSD. Kyle and a friend, Chad Littlefield, were shot at “point blank” range by Routh on at a Texas gun range on Saturday.
The report said that authorities have some information Routh may have been suffering the disorder and Kyle had him at the range for therapy.
“One treatment approach involves the slow, steady, re-exposure of patients to their PTSD triggers, according to George Everly, an associate professor of psychiatry at Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the article noted.
In light of the current debate over increased gun control, mental health care has been in the spotlight. Veterans, especially, need to know there are resources for them to get help.
Kyle’s charity, FITCO Cares Foundation, was founded to help vets recovering from PTSD.
