DHS releases video on how to survive a mass shooting: Run, hide, use scissors

Rock, paper, scissors, shoot.

Unfortunately, you are going to want to watch the new video from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on how to protect yourself in the event of an “active shooter situation.” It really does offer good advice for surviving such an awful incident, even though it doesn’t mention anything about armed self-defense.

The “Options for Consideration” video is “part of the Obama administration’s ongoing campaign to reduce firearm violence in the wake of the horrific mass murder last month of 20 children and six teachers in Newtown, Conn.,” a Homeland Security official told the New York Post. The video was in production before the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

The bottom line from DHS on staying alive if a gunman starts shooting up your workplace is to run like hell or hide.

However, “if you are caught out in the open and cannot conceal yourself or take cover, you might consider trying to overpower the shooter with whatever means are available,” the video suggests. In the video scenario, scissors were the weapon of choice.

Not for me.  This girl’s going for the staple remover.

In all seriousness, while DHS may want us to grab office supplies for self-defense in a worst-case scenario, I’ll be hiding with my friends carrying legal firearms, thank you.
