During Thursday morning’s Senate hearings to confirm Chuck Hagel as the next Secretary of Defense, Republican Sens. Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma and John McCain of Arizona confronted the nominee with some very pointed questions.
In the first video, Inhofe concentrated on reports that the Iranian Foreign Ministry is pleased with Hagel’s nomination.
“People of the Middle East, the Muslim region, and North Africa. People of these regions hate America from the bottom of their heart.” Inhofe began. “Further said Israel is a cancerous tumor in the heart of Islamic world. Further said, Iran’s warriors are ready and willing to wipe Israel off the map.” Inhofe then asked, “Why do you think that the Iranian foreign ministry so strongly supports your nomination to be Secretary of Defense?” Hagel laughed into his microphone and responded: “I have a difficult enough time with American politics, Senator. I have no idea. But thank you. And I’d be happy to respond further for the record.”
The exchange in the second video between Sen. McCain and Hagel was contentious to the point where Hagel appeared at times rattled.
McCain attacked Hagel in particular over his position on the surge in Iraq and to a lesser extent his policy toward Syria.
Fox News senior political analyst Brit Hume tweeted the following after the McCain – Hagel exchange:
“It’s probably dawning on Sens. who didn’t serve w/Hagel that he’s just not very bright. Exchange w/McCain unresponsive & bumbling.”
