Every action the Obama administration takes seems to be of historic value. If you don’t believe me, just ask White House Press Secretary Jay Carney, also known as “Baghdad Bob” in some circles.
Surely, you recall the real Baghdad Bob, the Iraqi information minister best known for his grandiose and grossly unrealistic propaganda broadcasts prior to and during the first Gulf War, where he extolled the invincibility of the Iraqi Army and the permanence of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein’s rule.
When presented with a question Tuesday on tighter border control measures, Carney said, “Our borders now are more secure than they have ever been in history.”
Wow, now that’s a definitive statement.
Carney went on to say that our borders “have never been better enforced than they are now… And we have made historic investments in manpower, technology and infrastructure to help secure our borders.”
No need to wonder about the legacy of this president — it’s being written right before our eyes. And while President Obama may not totally buy into the concept of “American exceptionalism,” it’s clear he believes in the exceptionalism of Barack Obama.
Unfortunately for Carney, the Washington Times released a report on the same day he was making his historic declaration, and it showed that “the latest numbers from the U.S. Border Patrol suggest that the flow across the nation’s southwest border jumped by 9 percent last year.” More from that story:
The Border Patrol made 356,873 arrests along the U.S.-Mexico border in fiscal year 2012, up from 327,577 in 2011, according to figures obtained by the Associated Press and confirmed by The Washington Times. Border Patrol officials estimate that apprehensions are a good proxy for illegal crossings, so when the numbers go up, it means that the flow of illegal immigrants is going up as well.
Last year’s increase marks a reversal. Apprehensions peaked in 2005 at 1.2 million and had been steadily dropping every year since as first President George W. Bush and then Mr. Obama committed more manpower and resources to the border.
Yet Baghdad Bob Carney told reporters that the numbers are a good sign, ignoring the fact that border arrests have increased for the first time since 2005 and comparing the numbers to 2008 instead.
“We’ve seen in fiscal year 2012 apprehensions totaled nearly 365,000 nationwide; that’s a 50 percent decrease from 2008,” Carney said.
In honor of the historic level of propaganda flowing from this administration, I offer the following video:
