I’ve had a grand time reading citizen-driven “We the People” petitions on the White House website for months now. The more newsworthy ones actually got a response from President Obama: for succession (Obama’s response: No); to build a Death Star (Obama’s response: “Uh, negative, too expensive, and we are trying to reduce the deficit, you know”); and of course, the hilarious petition to deport British CNN commentator Piers Morgan for his attack on the Second Amendment (Obama’s response: “He has First Amendment rights, yadda, yadda”).
In fact, the overwhelming popularity of petitions in recent months has forced the White House to raise the threshold of signatures needed for an official response from the administration — from 25,000 to 100,000, according to the White House blog.
The latest petition to cross the old threshold of 25,000 signatures calls for an end to the armed guards protecting the president, et.al. When Obama outlined his plan to take serious steps on gun control in December, “we the people” responded with a “Oh really, hypocrite? Good enough for thee, but not for me? Yeah, I don’t think so” petition that now has over 31,000 signatures. The petition reads:
WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO: Eliminate armed guards for the President, Vice-President, and their families, and establish Gun Free Zones around them
Gun Free Zones are supposed to protect our children, and some politicians wish to strip us of our right to keep and bear arms. Those same politicians and their families are currently under the protection of armed Secret Service agents. If Gun Free Zones are sufficient protection for our children, then Gun Free Zones should be good enough for politicians.
In January, while Obama and Vice President Joe Biden were scurrying to come up with the list of 23 executive orders curbing gun violence, BizPac Review brought you two articles showing the hypocrisy: “Obama signs lifetime Secret Service protection back into law” and “Obama admits wanting ‘men with guns’ guarding his daughters.” So I can’t wait to hear the response from the White House on gun-free zones around the president and vice president. I bet Obama won’t post a two-minute, 49-second video message like he did in response to petitions calling for more gun control.
