Obama to debut major immigration push Tuesday in Las Vegas

Obama thumbs upThe White House has announced Friday that President Obama will debut his plans for comprehensive immigration reform at an event Tuesday in Las Vegas.

With potential 2016 presidential contender U.S. Senator Marco Rubio having released his own plans for immigration reform and dominating the airwaves for the past week on the issue, it appears the Democratic Party is ready to put a damper on his monopoly.

As reported by The Hill:

In a statement, the White House said the president’s proposal would call for legislation to create a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants. Obama held a strategy session Friday with members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, telling the lawmakers that reform efforts would be “a top priority” in his second term.

Members of the caucus who were present at the meeting said Obama assured them that he shares the group’s basic beliefs about immigration reform, the Huffington Post notes. That belief includes making a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants an absolute must.

Rubio’s plan includes a pathway to citizenship, although it would have to be “earned.”
