Missouri proposal: Parents notify schools of gun ownership or be fined

With the clamor of politicians to introduce new gun legislation, Democratic State Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal of Missouri is proposing that parents must notify their child’s school if they own a firearm, and to pay a $100 fine if they do not comply, according to a Fox News report.

“I wholly believe in the Second Amendment, that everyone should have the right to bear arms,” said Chappelle-Nadal. “But the Second Amendment does not say that a 12-year-old can shoot a 12-year-old.”

Republican State Senator Brian Nieves disagrees with the proposal. “I think the Constitution has many things that it does not say,” Nieves told Fox News, “but one of the things the Constitution does certainly provide for is our privacy.”

Nieves said teachers and schools administrators should not become government investigators and that this will not improve gun safety.

“This is a measure that goes in the wrong direction,” said I am the chairman of the committee to which this bill has been assigned. This bill is not going to find a happy place in my committee.”
