What started out as a mere trickle — a sheriff here, a state there — announcing they would not enforce any restrictive federal gun control legislation, has now become a torrent of lawmen who in support of the Second Amendment.

In Utah, all but one county sheriff responded to President Obama’s 23 firearm-related executive orders with a letter directed to him as reported by Salt Lake City ABC affiliate channel 4.

“We are prepared to trade our lives in defense of the constitution of the United States,” Summit County, Utah Sheriff David Edmunds said according to the station.

30 of New Mexico’s 33 county sheriffs traveled to Santa Fe to remind their governor and lawmakers that the oath of office they took includes a promise to protect and defend the Constitution — including the right to bear arms, according to Albuquerque’s KOB Channel 4 news.

“We’re not lawmakers, we’re sheriffs,” Ken Christesen, San Juan County sheriff told KOB News. “That’s what we do, is enforce the law and defend the Constitution. We want to make sure that your rights as a citizen are protected.”

In addition to the Utah and New Mexico Sheriff’s associations, at least 90 individual county sheriffs have said “no” to Obama’s gun control, according to the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association, including Martin County, Fla. Sheriff Bill Snyder. Snyder said that although he supports stricter background checks, he’s against an outright ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, according to WPYV Channel 5 News.

Some states are also fighting back. Wyoming, Texas, Tennessee and Mississippi are among the growing number that will not enforce fede5al gun control legislation, with some even threatening to arrest federal agents who attempt to so do, as reported by the New York Times.

The final sentence of the Declaration of Independence reads, “We mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our Sacred Honor.” When the signers made that pledge, they were aware they were committing treason against a tyrannical government in defense of liberty. These brave county Sheriffs and state legislatures are doing much the same. We should wish them all Godspeed.
