While the country is going up in flames, President Obama and his trusty sidekick, Vice President Joe Biden, will be going into full-fledged campaign mode, hell-bent on drumming up support for gun control legislation.
If the president is good at anything, it’s campaigning. He proved that in 2008, when he rose from the ranks as a complete unknown to defeat all comers for a four-year lease on the White House.
He proved it again in November by getting re-elected, despite three credit downgrades, his $6 trillion addition to the national debt, a sluggish economy, dismal unemployment and a failure to answer for the Sept. 11 attack in Benghazi, Libya.
Campaigning is the president’s calling — his forte. Running the country is not.
Adhering to the adage, “find something you’re good at and stick with it,” the vice president announced to the U.S. Conference of Mayors that he and the president would be touring the country to garner support for the issue, Politico reported.
“We’re going to take this fight to the halls of Congress,” Politico quoted Biden as telling the gathering at the Capitol Hilton. “We’re going to take it beyond that. We’re going to take it to the American people. We’re going to go around the country making our case and we’re going to let the voices, the voices of the American people be heard.”
Unlike California Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s proposed legislation, the president’s proposal won’t emphasize an assault weapons ban. Politico said it will be centered on a more modest goal — universal background checks. That approach is based on political reality.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid opined recently that an assault weapons ban was not likely to pass both houses of Congress.
“Is it something that can pass the Senate? Maybe,” Reid told a Las Vegas PBS affiliate, according to Business Insider. “Is it something that can pass the House? I doubt it.”
Apparently taking this cue from Reid, Biden deemphasized the importance of an assault weapons ban.
“The weapon of choice in [the] vast majority of people who are killed is a handgun,” he told the Hilton gathering. Then, in what sounds like a push for a ban on so-called high-capacity magazines, he added “But you can put an awful lot of rounds in a Glock and a lot of other handguns.”
While questions about Benghazi remain unanswered and with Congress deadlocked on the debt ceiling and spending reductions, the “Barack and Biden Show” will be going on tour. Look for it at a theater near you.
