Florida’s 2014 gubernatorial election is off in the distance, but it seems some in the media are already in full campaign mode, determined to dog Gov. Rick Scott at every opportunity.
In a story that is sure to have legs, the Tampa Bay Times reported on the critically important question of what happened to the rescued Labrador retriever Scott acquired after winning the GOP nomination in 2010.
With all the suspense of a classic whodunit, the Times had several reporters tracking down the whereabouts of Reagan, as the ill-fated canine was named. Exhibiting the tenacity of bloodhounds, the team doggedly uncovered the Lab’s last reported sighting: He was being walked by the governor-elect in January 2011.
Naturally, it didn’t take long for fellow Republican Mitt Romney’s family dog, poor ol’ Seamus, to be brought into the Times story. Seamus, as you may recall, was reportedly tied to the top of the Romney family car during a vacation.
The media’s motive?
Classic Alinsky-style ridicule.
Community organizer Saul Alinsky’s “rules for radicals” goes like this:
“Ridicule is man’s most potent weapon.” There is no defense. It’s irrational. It’s infuriating. It also works as a key pressure point to force the enemy into concessions.
With Scott’s approval ratings in the dog house, he’s an easy target for such mockery. As previously reported in Bizpac Review, the governor can expect a heavy dose of ridicule in the early 2014 election season, since Florida’s media works to establish a narrative favorable to their ideological viewpoint.
Of course, for the critical thinker, if the media is covering disappearing dogs, perhaps they’re barking up the wrong tree and things are not as bad as advertised under Scott’s leadership.
As fate would have it, President Reagan was more affable than his canine namesake, who, according to the Times, “scared the living daylights” out of people at the Governor’s Mansion, prompting Scott to return the poor fella to his prior owner. The family now has a 7-year-old rescue Lab named Tallee.
And the dog days of the 2014 election are still far, far away.
