House passes $50.7 billion Sandy relief bill

Hurricane-SandyThe House approved $50.7 billion in emergency relief for Hurricane Sandy victims Tuesday night, Fox News reports.

In a clear sign that Congress is still not serious about cutting spending, members approved the Disaster Relief Appropriations Act, H.R. 152, in a 241-180 vote.

Among Republicans, 179 voted against it, and just 49 voted for it.

Conservative members say the spending measure is too big and provides funding for things other than immediate relief for New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, according to The Hill.

Many sought either to reduce the measure or offset part of its cost through spending cuts elsewhere in the budget.

The continued disarray of the Republican Party was on full display as the bill was driven through the House in large part by Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) , who cautioned members that it was “the right thing to do.”
