The Obama administration is, if reports are to be believed, living in an alternative universe — one in which if the president has any fault at all, it’s just that he’s too darned awesome for words.
In a Wall Street Journal interview with Stephen Moore, House Speaker John Boehner, R-OH, related that during the fiscal cliff negotiations last month, the president refused to acknowledge America’s spending problem. “We don’t have a spending problem,” the president told Boehner.
Instead, according to the president as related by the House speaker, our $16.4 trillion debt is the cause of “a health-care problem.”
As Boehner related to Moore, “’Clearly we have a health-care problem, which is about to get worse with ObamaCare. But, Mr. President, we have a very serious spending problem.’ He repeated this message so often, he says, that toward the end of the negotiations, the president became irritated and said: ‘I’m getting tired of hearing you say that.’”
Apparently White House Press Secretary Jay Carney didn’t get the message. He dropped the blame for our national debt squarely at the feet of Congress. After doing so, he reiterated the president’s assertion that he will not negotiate with Congress on any future debt ceiling increases.
“Nobody forced Congress to rack up the bills that it incurred,” Carney said at Monday’s White House press briefing. “And it is an abdication of responsibility to say we’re going to let the country default and cause global economic calamity simply because we’re not getting what we want in terms of our ideological agenda.”
Boehner, later in his Wall Street Journal interview opined to Moore that there were two reasons “the president [has] been such an immovable force when it comes to cutting spending:”
“He’s so ideological himself, and he’s unwilling to take on the left wing of his own party.”
On Monday evening’s edition of Special Report on Fox News, syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer commented on the Boehner interview:
“Look, it seems to me with the Boehner interview that Republican leadership is finally beginning to understand what some of us have been arguing now for four years. Barack Obama has zero interest in cutting spending.”
Let’s hope they understand.
